Advance Courier Fee Buy-Sell Scam in India 2026: Beware Before You Sell Online

The Advance Courier Fee Buy-Sell Scam is a rising threat targeting Indian sellers on platforms like OLX and Quikr, causing significant financial loss and distress through fake buyers demanding upfront courier charges.

What Is the Advance Courier Fee Buy-Sell Scam?

This scam primarily targets sellers who list goods for sale on popular classified websites and apps such as OLX, Quikr, and Facebook Marketplace in India. Fraudsters posing as genuine buyers express interest in the item, often mentioning they are out of town or abroad—commonly in Gulf countries—to create a sense of urgency and legitimacy. Sellers in India, eager to close the deal, engage in chats via WhatsApp, making communication appear personal and trustworthy.

As per reports received by cybercrime authorities like CERT-In and the Indian government's I4C (Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre), this scam has seen a sharp increase since late 2025, leading to serious financial setbacks for many sellers. The scammers exploit India’s growing reliance on digital payment methods, especially UPI, making it easier for them to request advance courier fees supposedly required to dispatch the product outside India or to the buyer’s remote location.

Official advisories from RBI and CERT-In emphasise vigilance while dealing with unknown buyers especially when advance payments are requested for courier or service charges before product delivery.

How This Scam Works — Step by Step

  1. Fake Buyer Contact: The scam starts with a caller or message from someone claiming to be a buyer interested in a product listed online. They often state they are residing in the Gulf or a distant city, justifying why a courier service is needed.

  2. Establishing Trust Through WhatsApp: The alleged buyer moves the conversation to WhatsApp, where they build rapport by answering queries and sounding genuine about the purchase.

  3. Request for Advance Courier Fee: The buyer then informs the seller that a courier service requires payment upfront to ship the item, often adding urgency by saying the payment should be made immediately to avoid cancellation.

  4. Sending Fake Payment Proof: To convince the seller, scammers send fabricated UPI payment screenshots or transaction IDs that look real but are fake.

  5. Victim Pays Courier Fee: The seller, trusting the payment proof, transfers the requested advance courier fee via UPI or other digital methods to the scammer’s account.

  6. Disappearance of Scammer: Once the money is transferred, the buyer either stops responding or gives excuses until all contact is lost. The product remains unsold, and the courier fee is lost with no way to recover.

Real Warning Signs to Watch For

What Happens to Victims

Victims in India often face immediate financial loss as the advance courier fee is sent through UPI IDs or bank transfers that cannot be reversed easily. Unlike bank NEFT or IMPS, UPI payments are mostly final once completed. Unfortunately, this leads to significant monetary damage, sometimes amounting to thousands of INR. Emotionally, victims experience betrayal, anxiety, and reduced trust in online marketplaces.

Some fraudsters exploit Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers for SIM swaps to intercept OTPs, increasing the risk of further unauthorized transactions or identity theft. Victims may also suffer long-term consequences like blacklisting from trading platforms or complications in filing police complaints without clear evidence.

What RBI and CERT-In Say

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and CERT-In have issued general advisories warning users to beware of advance payment requests during online transactions and to verify the identity of the buyer thoroughly before sending money. RBI’s advisory reminds users that UPI payments are final and urges reporting of fraudulent transactions promptly.

CERT-In encourages users to report such cases on cybercrime.gov.in and to use the national helpline number 1930 for cyber fraud assistance. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) also works closely with law enforcement to monitor and act on such scams across the country.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Never Pay Advance Courier Fees: Legitimate buyers rarely ask for upfront courier charges.
  2. Verify Buyer Identity: Insist on meeting in person or confirming official contact numbers.
  3. Do Not Trust Fake Payment Proof: Always check payment confirmation on your bank or UPI app directly.
  4. Avoid Sharing Personal Data: Do not share Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details with unknown buyers.
  5. Use Platform Escrow Services: Prefer listings that offer secure payment gateways with escrow.
  6. Report Suspicious Profiles: Inform the classifieds platform immediately if you suspect fraud.
  7. Use Official Helplines Early: Contact the 1930 cybercrime helpline if approached with unusual payment demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I get my money back if I paid the advance courier fee?
A: Unfortunately, UPI payments are generally irreversible once completed, making it very difficult to recover lost money. Immediate reporting to your bank and cybercrime authorities increases chances of recovery but is not guaranteed.

Q: How can I verify if a buyer’s payment proof is genuine?
A: Always cross-check payment confirmation in your bank’s UPI app or statement. Do not rely solely on screenshots sent by the buyer.

Q: Is meeting the buyer in person a safe way to avoid this scam?
A: Yes, meeting in person or at a trusted location significantly reduces risk. Insisting on cash payment on delivery or verified digital payments ensures safer transactions.

Sell online safely by verifying all buyer requests and payments. Always be skeptical of advance payment demands.
