Fraudsters in India are increasingly using AI-powered deepfake voice calls impersonating police to trick people into sharing UPI details and WhatsApp access.
What Is the AI Deepfake Police Arrest Call?
The AI Deepfake Police Arrest Call scam is a sophisticated fraud targeting Indian citizens through WhatsApp and phone calls. Using artificial intelligence, scammers generate realistic-sounding voices mimicking police officers or legal authorities. Victims receive calls informing them of a fake arrest warrant or legal issue allegedly involving their Aadhaar or bank account. The scammers claim urgent action is required, often linking it to fraudulent UPI transactions or unpaid fines.
This scam primarily targets smartphone users across urban and rural India who rely heavily on UPI payments and WhatsApp communication. According to public complaints reported to cybercrime cells and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), there has been a surge in such calls since late 2025, with losses running into lakhs of rupees. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued general advisories to stay alert against phone-based impersonation. Although a specific advisory on deepfake calls is not yet published, the RBI and CERT-In emphasize vigilance in UPI transaction authorization and unsolicited calls from supposed authorities.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
Initial Deepfake Call: The victim receives a WhatsApp message or call from an unknown number. When answered, an AI-generated voice claiming to be a police officer or cybercrime official informs the target that they are under investigation or about to be arrested due to serious financial irregularities involving their Aadhaar or bank account.
Panic and Pressure: The caller uses authoritative language, fake case numbers, and legal jargon to create urgency. They warn that ignoring the call or not cooperating will lead to immediate arrest or account freezing.
Request for Verification: The fraudster asks the victim to confirm their personal details like Aadhaar number, bank account details, and UPI PIN “for verification” or to “stop fraudulent transactions.” In some cases, they instruct victims to share an OTP or QR code sent to their phone.
Malicious Link or App: Either during or after the call, the scammer sends a WhatsApp message with a link or urges the victim to install a “verification app.” This app can capture OTPs or simulate a UPI payment interface.
UPI Fraud Execution: Using the info and access gained, fraudsters initiate unauthorized UPI transfers from the victim’s linked bank accounts. Since UPI payments cannot always be reversed quickly, victims lose significant funds.
Continued Pressure & Blackmail: Some scammers keep calling, demanding more money or threatening to involve family members, further distressing the victim.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- Calls from unknown numbers claiming urgent legal action without official letter or email.
- AI-generated voice that sounds unnatural or robotic at times.
- Requests for UPI PIN, OTP, or QR code sharing over phone or WhatsApp.
- Messages or calls insisting on installing unknown apps or scanning QR codes.
- Threats of arrest or account freezing used to create panic and rush decisions.
- Claims linking the scam to Aadhaar or bank accounts without prior official notice.
- Follow-up pressure calls demanding more money or sensitive info.
What Happens to Victims
Victims of this scam face severe financial losses as fraudsters drain bank accounts through UPI transfers. Unlike credit/debit card fraud, UPI payments are often final and non-reversible, leaving victims out of pocket. Alongside monetary damage, victims experience intense emotional stress, anxiety, and fear due to the impersonation of law enforcement.
In some reported cases, victims’ Aadhaar details have been misused further, causing identity theft and KYC fraud. A SIM swap or mobile number takeover triggered by these calls can also lead to prolonged access by criminals to the victim’s digital life. The impact often extends to family members who may be harassed or threatened by scammers posing as police.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) underscores that no bank or officer will ask for UPI PIN or OTP over the phone. RBI’s guidelines strictly prohibit sharing sensitive banking details with anyone and recommend immediate reporting of unauthorized transactions. CERT-In advises citizens to be cautious about unsolicited calls and messages, especially those pressuring for quick action or personal data disclosure. The national cybercrime helpline 1930 is recommended for reporting fraud attempts and getting assistance.
While specific advisories on AI deepfake calls are emerging, the general cybersecurity framework in India emphasizes multi-factor authentication, awareness of phishing tactics, and reporting suspicious activity promptly. I4C continues to monitor such scams and coordinates with law enforcement to disseminate warnings.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, Aadhaar details, or bank account info over phone or WhatsApp.
- Do not install any app or click on links sent by unknown callers claiming to be police or government officials.
- Verify any legal or police communication independently by calling the official police station or bank branch.
- Avoid panic — police usually send formal notices and do not make arrest threats by phone.
- Use official apps and websites for UPI payments; disable auto-accept features if available.
- Regularly update your smartphone and WhatsApp to the latest versions to reduce exploits.
- Register your mobile number with the Do Not Disturb (DND) service to reduce spam calls.
What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted
- Immediately block the scammer’s number on WhatsApp and phone.
- Contact your bank to freeze your UPI and bank account linked mobile number.
- File a complaint on the national cybercrime portal at cybercrime.gov.in, providing call records, screenshots, and transaction details.
- Call the 1930 cybercrime helpline and inform them about the deepfake call.
- Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication on all financial apps.
- Inform family members so they can be on alert against similar fraud attempts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can police officers call and ask for my UPI PIN or Aadhaar details?
A: No. Real police or government officials never ask for sensitive banking details like UPI PIN or Aadhaar number over phone calls or WhatsApp. Always verify through official channels.
Q: How can I tell if a voice call is AI deepfake or real?
A: AI deepfake voices may sound unnatural, have pauses, robotic tones, or use generic phrases repeatedly. If in doubt, hang up and verify independently.
Q: Are UPI transaction losses recoverable?
A: UPI payments are usually instant and final. While some banks offer limited protection, there is no guaranteed refund. Reporting quickly to your bank and cybercrime authorities improves chances of recovery.
