Beware the Brand Name Lottery Call Scam in India 2026: How Fraudsters Target You via UPI and WhatsApp

Millions of Indians are at risk from a rising lottery call scam where fraudsters posing as trusted brands trick victims into sharing money and personal data through phone and WhatsApp phishing.

What Is the Brand Name Lottery Call Scam?

The Brand Name Lottery Call Scam is a form of cyber fraud where callers impersonate famous Indian brands or popular TV shows such as Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), Amazon, or financial service providers to claim you have won a prize or lottery. This scam design specifically targets smartphone users who frequently share their contact details online or participate in contests, often via social media or messaging apps. The data is then used by scammers to make unsolicited calls or send phishing messages.

In India, this scam has seen an alarming increase in reports to cybercrime units and helplines. According to public complaints logged with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and advisories by CERT-In, these calls frequently use spoofed or generic phone numbers, making it difficult to verify authenticity. Victims are usually lured into revealing UPI PINs, OTPs, or Aadhaar details, which cybercriminals exploit to steal money directly from bank accounts or conduct SIM swap frauds. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also issued reminders to stay cautious of such phishing schemes targeting digital payments.

How This Scam Works — Step by Step

  1. Data Collection: Scammers gather phone numbers through social media, public directories, or databases bought from third parties. Often, these numbers belong to people who have entered genuine contest giveaways or posted personal info online.

  2. First Contact – The Call: The target receives an unsolicited call claiming to be from a familiar brand or show like KBC, Amazon, or a reputed bank. The caller ID may appear genuine due to number spoofing.

  3. Creating Urgency: The caller tells the victim they have won a big prize or lottery but must claim it quickly or meet certain conditions. This tactic aims to panic or excite the victim into cooperating without skepticism.

  4. Asking for Personal or Payment Details: To “verify identity” or “release the prize,” the scammer requests personal information such as Aadhaar number, date of birth, or bank details. At times, they ask the victim to share UPI PINs or OTPs, claiming it’s standard procedure or necessary for registration.

  5. Fake Verification via WhatsApp: The victim may be asked to send photos of documents or respond to WhatsApp messages from a deceptive number impersonating customer support.

  6. Money Transfers & Account Takeover: Using the stolen UPI PIN or data, the fraudster initiates transactions siphoning money from the victim’s bank account. Simultaneously, they may conduct SIM swap attacks, gaining control over phone-based OTPs and further compromising accounts.

  7. Silence and Disappearance: Once money is transferred, the call ceases, and scammers block the victim to avoid detection.

Real Warning Signs to Watch For

What Happens to Victims

Victims of the Brand Name Lottery Call Scam often suffer significant financial loss since digital payment methods like UPI allow near-instant fund transfers that cannot be reversed easily. Unlike traditional cheque frauds, reversing a UPI transaction typically requires immediate action and cooperation from banks—a window that scammers exploit ruthlessly.

Emotionally, victims report stress, anxiety, and mistrust, especially when their Aadhaar data or SIM card has been involved. Aadhaar misuse adds a layer of identity theft which may affect services like mobile connections, government benefits, or bank KYC verifications. Victims may also face challenges restoring their compromised bank accounts or mobile numbers because of complex verification processes and delays in grievance redressal.

What RBI and CERT-In Say

The Reserve Bank of India has repeatedly warned users against sharing OTPs and UPI PINs with anyone, irrespective of the source. RBI helpline (1800 425 3800) and CERT-In advise avoiding calls claiming unsolicited winnings or prizes. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) encourages filing complaints through cybercrime.gov.in and calls emergency users to report suspicious calls on the 1930 cybercrime helpline.

CERT-In guidelines emphasize verifying the authenticity of calls independently and recommend never clicking on unknown links sent via WhatsApp or SMS. RBI also advises users to regularly monitor bank statements for unauthorized transactions and promptly notify the bank in case of suspicious activity.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Never share your UPI PIN, OTP, Aadhaar details, or bank credentials over phone or WhatsApp.
  2. Avoid responding to unsolicited calls or messages claiming lottery winnings, no matter how attractive.
  3. Independently verify the authenticity of any brand-related calls by contacting their official customer service.
  4. Do not click on links or download apps sent via WhatsApp or SMS from unknown numbers.
  5. Use the “Do Not Disturb” (DND) service to block promotional and unknown number calls.
  6. Enable UPI PIN and app notifications and immediately report unauthorized transactions to your bank.
  7. Regularly update your mobile and banking apps to the latest versions for better security.

What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a lottery call is fake or genuine?
Always be cautious of unsolicited lottery calls, especially if you did not participate in any contest. Genuine companies rarely ask for sensitive information like UPI PIN or Aadhaar over the phone, and they never pressure you to make immediate payment.

Can scammers really steal money just by knowing my UPI ID?
Knowing only your UPI ID or phone number is not enough. However, if you share your UPI PIN or OTP, scammers can initiate transactions. Safeguard this information strictly and never share PINs or OTPs.

What should I do if I accidentally shared my UPI PIN with a caller?
Immediately contact your bank to block your UPI ID or reset your PIN. Report the fraud on cybercrime.gov.in and notify your mobile service provider to prevent SIM swap attacks. Act quickly to avoid losing more money.
