Beware in 2026: Fake Airtel eSIM Upgrade Calls Scam Threatens Indian Users

A new wave of fake Airtel eSIM upgrade calls is sweeping across India, putting millions at risk of losing money and sensitive data through UPI, WhatsApp, and KYC-related fraud.

What Is the Fake Airtel eSIM Upgrade Calls Scam?

This scam involves fraudsters posing as Airtel customer care executives, reaching out to unsuspecting mobile users with calls about a mandatory eSIM upgrade. Targeting Airtel subscribers across India, these scammers exploit regulations and the growing use of eSIM technology to trick users into revealing personal details or authorizing UPI transactions. The scam has been reported from metro cities to smaller towns, showing no geographic limitation in its spread.

According to public complaints received by cybercrime cells and reported advisories, the fraudsters use social engineering such as spoofed phone numbers appearing official, copied Airtel employee scripts, and fabricated urgency about regulatory changes to convince victims. With eSIM adoption rising following UIDAI’s push for digital identity and mobile security, fraudsters have found this an opportune moment to exploit lack of user awareness.

While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and CERT-In have not issued a scam-specific alert on this variant yet, their general guidance on UPI safety and SIM swap fraud underscores the critical threat level. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) continues to monitor these evolving schemes and encourages users to report suspicious calls immediately.

How This Scam Works — Step by Step

  1. Target & Initial Contact: A user receives an unsolicited call from a number that seems to be Airtel’s official helpline (thanks to number spoofing). The caller claims to be from Airtel customer support and urges the user to upgrade their SIM to an eSIM due to recent regulatory updates.

  2. Creating Urgency and Fear: The caller creates panic, alleging that failure to upgrade immediately will result in service suspension or security risks like blacklisting of the SIM.

  3. Personal Information Request: The caller asks for verification details – full name, date of birth, Aadhaar number, OTPs, or QR code scans linked to UPI apps like BHIM or WhatsApp Pay. In some cases, the victim is told to share the Aadhaar-linked mobile number or PAN details for KYC validation.

  4. Duplicate SIM Activation or UPI Fund Transfer: Once armed with this information, the fraudsters either initiate a fake eSIM activation to perform a SIM swap or trick the user into authorizing UPI money transfers. Victims may be asked to scan QR codes or share transaction PINs, enabling the fraudsters to drain their bank accounts instantly.

  5. Victim Realises Too Late: By the time the phone services get disrupted or UPI transactions show up as debits, the user understands they’ve been defrauded. Attempts to reverse payments fail since UPI transactions are mostly irreversible once confirmed.

Real Warning Signs to Watch For

What Happens to Victims

Victims often face immediate financial loss via UPI transactions authorised without full awareness. RBI’s UPI guidelines confirm that once transactions are approved using UPI PIN or OTP, reversals are rare except in cases of technical errors. The misuse of Aadhaar and KYC data further exposes victims to recurring fraud risks, including unauthorized loans or identity theft.

Emotionally, victims can feel violated and helpless as their primary mobile connection gets suspended (SIM swap scenario), cutting off access to banking apps and OTPs necessary for recovery. Many suffer delays and frustrations dealing with banks, Airtel’s customer care, and law enforcement. The emotional toll includes stress, anxiety, and sometimes social embarrassment over financial losses.

What RBI and CERT-In Say

RBI’s cybersecurity framework includes strict warnings against sharing OTPs, PINs, or KYC info through unsolicited calls or messages. The RBI helpline (022-2657 8267) is available for reporting suspicious banking operations.

CERT-In has flagged SIM swap and OTP-related fraud as critical cyber threats. Their advisories recommend vigilance when receiving unexpected calls or requests for personal details. Users can report incidents on the I4C portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 for assistance.

Both agencies emphasize that legitimate telecom upgrades do not require sharing sensitive details over the phone. Airtel or any mobile operator will never ask for bank details or UPI PINs during authentic eSIM upgrade processes.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, or Aadhaar/KYC details over unsolicited calls or WhatsApp.
  2. Verify any call about eSIM upgrades by calling Airtel’s official customer care via known numbers.
  3. Do not scan QR codes sent via unknown or suspicious sources for payments or verification.
  4. Use the official Airtel app or website to initiate any SIM or eSIM upgrade requests personally.
  5. Set up UPI transaction limits and enable two-factor authentication to reduce fraud risk.
  6. Regularly monitor your bank and UPI transaction alerts for any unauthorized activity.
  7. Register complaints immediately on cybercrime.gov.in and alert your bank to freeze payments if you suspect fraud.

What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can Airtel officials call me directly for an eSIM upgrade in 2026?
A: Airtel generally requires users to request eSIM activation through their official app, website, or by visiting a store. They do not initiate unsolicited calls demanding personal data or UPI verification for upgrades.

Q: What if I shared my OTP or scanned a QR code during such a call?
A: Sharing OTPs or scanning suspicious QR codes can immediately allow fraudsters to access your bank account or UPI wallet. Contact your bank and mobile operator instantly to block transactions and report the breach.

Q: Is it possible to reverse fraudulent UPI payments made via this scam?
A: UPI payments authorized by OTP or PIN are mostly irreversible except in cases of technical errors or bank-initiated refunds. Early reporting improves chances of recovery but prevention is the best defense.

If you receive suspicious calls or messages about your Airtel eSIM upgrade, never share confidential details. Verify first on Airtel’s official platform or BharatSecure.app, and report fraud attempts immediately to the 1930 cybercrime helpline.
