Millions of Indians shopping online are falling prey to a rising threat—the Fake Courier Delivery Payment Scam—that tricks victims into making bogus UPI payments via WhatsApp messages and calls.
What Is the Fake Courier Delivery Payment Scam?
This scam has become alarmingly common across India, targeting online shoppers waiting for their courier parcels. Fraudsters pose as employees or customer service agents from well-known courier companies like Blue Dart, DTDC, or FedEx India. By exploiting India’s booming e-commerce culture and our reliance on fast parcel deliveries, scammers trick people into paying fake fees for package clearance or delivery.
The scam thrives especially during festive seasons such as Diwali, Holi, or End of Year sales when courier volumes spike and recipients become impatient or distracted. According to CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) and the Indian government’s I4C (Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre), this scam has caused hundreds of crores in losses so far, primarily through UPI payments or direct bank transfers initiated via WhatsApp messages.
RBI has also cautioned users about fraudulent payment requests from fake courier agents asking for small amounts via UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, which then lead to larger unauthorized debits.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
Initial Contact: The scam usually starts with a WhatsApp message or an unsolicited phone call. The fraudster introduces themselves as a courier company representative, claiming your parcel cannot be delivered due to unpaid delivery charges or customs clearance fees.
Creating Urgency: They pressure you urgently, saying the parcel will be returned or destroyed unless you pay immediately. Sometimes, they claim the payment failed earlier or that there is penalty or fast-track service fee.
Payment Request: The scammer sends a UPI ID, QR code, or bank account number via WhatsApp, instructing you to pay the “delivery fee.” They often use fake names or phone numbers masquerading as official company contacts.
Fake Payment Confirmation: After payment, they may send a fake transaction receipt or confirm the parcel is now on its way—but the victim’s money is already gone.
Further Manipulation: If the victim suspects fraud or tries to call back the supposed courier company, the fraudster may become aggressive or disappear. In some cases, they ask for additional payments citing new problems.
Loss Realization: Victims only realize they’ve been scammed after the real courier service shows no record of their parcel or payment.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- Unsolicited WhatsApp or calls claiming delivery issues without any prior communication from official courier channels.
- Requests to pay “small” amounts immediately via UPI or bank transfer to unfamiliar accounts.
- Pressure tactics demanding instant payment or threatening parcel return or destruction.
- Use of generic phone numbers instead of verified courier company helpline numbers.
- Poor grammar and spelling mistakes in messages claiming to be from courier firms.
- Fake payment confirmation receipts sent digitally, often with mismatched details.
- No official SMS or emails from courier/logistics companies with payment or delivery updates.
What Happens to Victims
Victims often lose hundreds or thousands of rupees through UPI or direct bank transfers. Since UPI payments are mostly instantaneous and irreversible beyond a certain time frame, victims rarely recover money. Moreover, fraudsters sometimes use SIM swap techniques combined with Aadhaar-related identity theft to access victims’ bank accounts, amplifying financial damage.
Emotionally, victims feel violated, anxious, and hesitant to trust online shopping or digital payments. The scam can lead to harassment from persistent fraudsters or negative marks on credit if linked identities are compromised. Many victims also struggle with police complaints and fund recovery in India’s complex cybercrime investigation system.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
The Reserve Bank of India has repeatedly warned customers not to share UPI PINs or authorise payments through suspicious links or through unknown contacts impersonating courier services. RBI’s guidelines emphasise verifying payment requests directly with courier company helplines.
CERT-In advises users to be extremely cautious about unsolicited messages asking for payments and to report any scam attempt on the 1930 cybercrime helpline immediately. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) also recommends using official apps and websites to track courier deliveries rather than responding to WhatsApp messages.
For urgent help, victims can call:
- National Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930
- RBI Consumer Helpline: 1800-22-1911
How to Protect Yourself
- Always verify your parcel status on official courier websites or apps before paying any fees.
- Never make payments on UPI or bank apps based on WhatsApp messages or unsolicited calls.
- Don’t share UPI PINs, OTPs, or debit card details with anyone—even if they claim to be courier agents.
- Ignore messages claiming your parcel is “stuck” or requires urgent payment—contact courier company’s official helpline instead.
- Use call-back numbers listed on courier company websites to confirm delivery issues.
- Check sender WhatsApp numbers carefully—official courier companies rarely use personal mobile numbers.
- Keep your Aadhaar linked phone number safe and monitor for unauthorized SIM swap requests through your telecom provider.
What to Do If You've Been Targeted
- Immediately block the scammer’s WhatsApp number.
- Report the transaction to your bank and request UPI payment cancellation—though chances are limited if funds are instantly transferred.
- File a complaint at the nearest cyber police station or online at Cybercrime.gov.in.
- Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 to report the incident.
- Inform your mobile service provider if you suspect a SIM swap or fraudulent SIM activity.
- Change UPI app and mobile banking PINs immediately and monitor your bank account for unusual transactions.
- Keep all evidence like messages, call records, and transaction IDs to help investigations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I get my money back if I paid a fake courier delivery fee via UPI?
A: It’s difficult to reverse UPI payments because they are instant and meant to be final. You should immediately contact your bank and lodge a complaint but don’t rely solely on reversal. Reporting the scam to cyber authorities is essential.
Q: How can I confirm if a courier is genuine before making any payment?
A: Always check the courier company’s official website or app using your tracking number. Reach out to their official customer service numbers rather than responding to WhatsApp messages or calls.
Q: What if I receive suspicious messages on WhatsApp about my parcel—should I reply?
A: No. Do not reply or click on any links. Block the number, and verify parcel status directly with the courier company through trusted channels.
