Beware of the Fake Customer Care Number Scam in India 2026: Protect Your UPI and Bank Accounts

Fraudsters in India are increasingly exploiting fake customer care numbers to steal your money, especially through UPI and phishing attacks.

What Is the Fake Customer Care Number Scam?

The Fake Customer Care Number Scam is a dangerous cyber fraud targeting Indian users who seek help with banking, telecom, e-wallets, or e-commerce issues. Scammers create fake phone numbers and list them on search engines or social media as official “customer care” contacts. When you call these numbers, you believe you're talking to a legitimate representative of your bank or payment app, but actually, you connect with a fraudster aiming to steal your personal and financial information.

This scam mainly targets anyone trying to resolve urgent issues related to UPI transactions, mobile wallet payments, or Aadhaar-linked services. In India, where UPI transactions exceed 8 billion a month, the impact is widespread and growing rapidly. Many victims have lost lakhs of rupees without realizing how they got scammed. The Indian government, through CERT-In (Computer Emergency Response Team - India) and I4C (Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre), alongside RBI, has repeatedly warned consumers about trusting unverified customer care numbers.

RBI advisories urge customers to only use officially published bank helpline numbers and caution against sharing sensitive data like OTPs, passwords, or Aadhaar details over the phone. Despite awareness efforts, the scam continues to proliferate due to the increasing digital adoption and the urgent nature of payment-related issues.

How This Scam Works — Step by Step

  1. You search online or on social media for your bank’s or payment app’s customer care number after facing an urgent issue—maybe a stuck UPI transaction or suspected fraud on your account.

  2. You find a number that looks official—it may appear on a website or a WhatsApp forward claiming to be the official helpline.

  3. You call the number, and the scammer answers, posing as a customer care executive. They speak convincingly, sometimes providing partial data from your account (obtained from data leaks) to gain your trust.

  4. The fraudster asks for sensitive information—this includes your full name, UPI PIN, OTPs sent via SMS, Aadhaar details, or bank account numbers.

  5. They create urgency or scare tactics, saying your account is at risk, or payments have failed, encouraging you to share OTPs or follow instructions to “secure” your transaction.

  6. Once they get your OTP or credentials, they can immediately transfer money out of your bank account or UPI app, often through SIM swap frauds or remote authorization.

  7. By the time you realise, the money is gone, and reversing these UPI transactions is almost impossible because the victim shared authentic OTPs, which is against the reversal policies of banks and NPCI.

Real Warning Signs to Watch For

What Happens to Victims

Victims can lose thousands or even lakhs of rupees within minutes, drained directly from UPI-linked bank accounts or digital wallets. Since UPI transactions require only the user’s OTP for authentication, sharing this with scammers enables immediate fund transfer with little chance of reversal. Victims may also suffer from Aadhaar misuse, leading to identity theft and repeated financial losses.

Emotionally, victims report high stress, anxiety, and loss of trust in digital payments. In rural or less digitally-savvy areas, victims may hesitate to report losses due to stigma or fear of complicated procedures. Moreover, SIM swap frauds linked to this scam can lock users out of their mobile and banking apps, increasing the damage.

What RBI and CERT-In Say

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued multiple advisories warning customers against sharing OTPs or UPI PINs. RBI helpline (also reachable via the toll-free number 1800-112-565) urges users to verify customer care numbers only through official bank websites or RBI’s directory. CERT-In’s guidelines emphasise vigilance while searching for customer care numbers online and encourage reporting suspicious calls immediately.

I4C has also launched a 24x7 cybercrime helpline at 1930 where victims can lodge complaints about fraudulent activities including fake customer care scams. While RBI cannot reverse genuine authorized transactions done via OTP, they strongly advise users to file complaints early for potential investigation and protection.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Always verify the customer care number from your bank’s official website, app, or RBI’s official directory before calling.
  2. Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, passwords, or Aadhaar details over a phone call or SMS.
  3. Avoid trusting numbers found on social media, WhatsApp, or random websites.
  4. Recognize that official calls will never ask you to install remote access software.
  5. If someone urges you to act fast or threatens account suspension, hang up and call the official helpline independently.
  6. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your bank app and keep your mobile SIM secure with a PIN.
  7. Regularly check your bank and UPI transaction history. Report immediately if you spot unauthorized transactions.

What to Do If You've Been Targeted

  1. Immediately call your bank’s official helpline and report the fraud to block your account or UPI payment facility.
  2. Contact your mobile operator to lock or swap your SIM to prevent further misuse.
  3. File a complaint with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) at cybercrime.gov.in.
  4. Call the cybercrime helpline 1930 to lodge your issue and receive guidance.
  5. Inform RBI helpline (1800-112-565) and your bank about the scam to check if any measures can be taken.
  6. Keep screenshots, call records, and any messages as evidence.
  7. Watch your accounts carefully over the next weeks for any suspicious activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can UPI transactions be reversed if I share OTP with a scammer?
A: No, RBI guidelines state that transactions authorized with your OTP are considered valid and fund reversals are generally not allowed. Early reporting can help but prevention is key.

Q: How do scammers get access to my Aadhaar or bank details to sound convincing?
A: Data breaches and phishing attacks leak personal information, which fraudsters use to build trust. That’s why never share additional sensitive info over unsolicited calls.

Q: What is the safest way to get customer support for banking or payment issues?
A: Use official bank websites or apps for customer care numbers. Never call numbers from WhatsApp forwards or unknown websites. Cross-check the number through official channels before calling.
