Check This Scam on BharatSecure →Fake Customer Care Numbers on Google Search Scam in India 2026: Beware of Phishing and Loan App Frauds
Fraudsters are exploiting fake customer care numbers listed on Google Search to steal OTPs and lure victims into fake loan apps in India.
What Is the Fake Customer Care Numbers on Google Search?
This scam involves fraudsters posting counterfeit customer care phone numbers that appear in Google Search results when users look up helpline numbers for banks, financial services, or popular loan apps. These numbers are not official but are made to look credible, often mimicking real customer support contacts. When victims call these bogus numbers, they are tricked into sharing sensitive details such as OTPs (One-Time Passwords), UPI PINs, or Aadhaar-related information.
The scam primarily targets digitally active individuals in India, especially those seeking quick loan approvals or customer service support for banking transactions. With the rapid growth of digital payments and instant loan apps, many users rely on Google Search to find contact details. Fraudsters leverage this dependency, causing significant financial losses.
According to reports received by CERT-In and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), cases of fake customer care number scams connected to phishing and loan app frauds have increased sharply since 2024. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also issued general advisories warning users against verifying customer care numbers only via search engines due to risks of impersonation.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
Victim searches for customer care number: A user searches on Google for a bank or loan app’s official customer support phone number, hoping to resolve a transaction or get loan information.
Fraudulent phone number appears: The search results show a fake phone number prominently. This number may have positive-sounding reviews or appear on third-party sites controlled by scammers.
Victim calls the number: When called, an automated voice or a person claiming to be a customer care executive answers. They create a sense of urgency — for example, saying the victim’s loan application is stuck or there is a suspicious transaction.
Personal data and OTP requested: The caller asks the victim to share sensitive details — OTP received on phone, UPI PIN, Aadhaar authentication codes, or bank account numbers “for verification”.
Malicious instructions to install apps: Sometimes, the caller directs the victim to download a fake loan app or remote access software, claiming it will speed up loan approval or fix account issues.
Loss of money and data: Using the OTPs and apps, fraudsters complete unauthorized UPI transactions or misuse Aadhaar e-KYC. Victims end up losing money from bank accounts or falling victim to identity theft.
Communication ends abruptly: Once the money is stolen, fraudsters stop responding, leaving victims trapped with no easy way to recover losses.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- The customer care number is not listed on the official bank or loan app website.
- Caller asks for OTP, UPI PIN, or Aadhaar details, which official support never requests.
- The phone number appears on multiple unrelated third-party websites with inconsistent information.
- Pressures you to download unknown apps or software immediately.
- Offers unrealistic promises like instant loan approvals without documentation.
- Urgent language that pushes you to act quickly without verifying.
- Callers refuse to connect you to a supervisor or official branch.
What Happens to Victims
Victims frequently suffer financial loss as fraudsters utilize stolen OTPs to initiate UPI payments or loan disbursements without their consent. Since UPI transactions are usually quick and irreversible, recovering the money can be difficult. Some victims also report fraudulent loan deductions from their accounts or misuse of Aadhaar information leading to further identity fraud.
Beyond money loss, victims experience stress and difficulty as they try to freeze accounts, block SIM cards (to prevent further OTP leaks via SIM swap fraud), and coordinate with their bank to reverse transactions. Emotional trauma arises from the violation of personal data, and victims often feel helpless if unaware of official complaint channels or regulatory protections.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reminded consumers to verify customer care numbers only through official bank or app websites and avoid sharing OTPs or PINs over phone calls. RBI stresses that no legitimate bank or financial service calls customers requesting sensitive credentials.
CERT-In and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) advise against trusting phone numbers found through casual Google searches and encourage reporting suspicious calls to the 1930 cybercrime helpline. Both agencies emphasize heightened vigilance as phishing via fake customer care numbers is a growing threat linked to fraudulent loan apps exploiting India’s digital finance ecosystem.
How to Protect Yourself
- Always verify customer care numbers from official bank or loan app websites, not Google Search listings or third-party sites.
- Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, or Aadhaar authentication details over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from customer support.
- Avoid downloading apps or software based on instructions from unsolicited calls; install apps only from trusted sources like Google Play Store.
- Use two-factor authentication (2FA) and regularly update UPI app settings to prevent unauthorized transactions.
- Enable “Do Not Disturb” (DND) services from telecom operators to block spam calls.
- Register for mobile number portability (MNP) locks to prevent SIM swap fraud.
- Keep your Aadhaar and bank KYC details secure and never disclose them on calls or messages.
What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted
- Immediately contact your bank to block debit cards, UPI IDs, and accounts involved.
- Lodge a complaint with your bank and ask for transaction reversal following RBI guidelines.
- Report the incident to the 1930 cybercrime helpline and file a complaint on the cybercrime.gov.in portal under the appropriate phishing or fraud category.
- Inform your telecom operator to block or replace your SIM if SIM swap is suspected.
- Change passwords and PINs for online banking and UPI apps.
- Keep records of all communication with the fraudsters and law enforcement.
- Seek support from consumer helplines or legal advisors if needed.
