A rising number of Indians are falling victim to a new high-risk scam where fraudsters posing as foreign grooms use fake romance and ‘gift box’ promises to steal money via UPI and WhatsApp.
What Is the Fake Foreign Groom 'Gift Box' Romance Scam?
The Fake Foreign Groom 'Gift Box' Romance Scam is an emerging cybercrime spree targeting especially women and young adults in India who seek romance or marriage proposals from foreign nationals. Scammers impersonate foreign suitors on WhatsApp and social media platforms to build trust and romantic interest. They then lure victims with promises of expensive “gift boxes” purportedly sent from abroad, containing valuables or cash, often linked to a fictitious marriage proposal.
Victims are usually asked to pay various fees using UPI transactions, such as customs clearance charges, taxes, or delivery fees to receive the gift box. Once the money is transferred, the so-called groom disappears. In some cases, these fraudsters also try to trap victims with fake job offers related to foreign employers or shipping companies, blending romance and job fraud controls.
This scam has gained wider traction in India during 2025-2026, as reported in several complaints to cybercrime cells and on the I4C platform under the Ministry of Home Affairs. CERT-In and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have issued broad warnings against romance and gift-related scams involving UPI transactions due to their growing financial impact.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
Initial Contact on WhatsApp or Social Media: The caller claiming to be a “foreign groom” sends a friend request, then starts chatting to create a romantic connection, sometimes citing cultural or personal stories to build trust.
Promise of a Gift Box: Once trust is established, they mention sending a “gift box” filled with valuables as part of the engagement or marriage proposal. They often provide fake tracking numbers or official-looking courier details.
Request for Payment: The scammer then informs the victim that customs fees, taxes, or delivery charges need to be paid to receive the gift box. They insist on UPI payment for convenience, asking the victim to pay in multiple instalments to different UPI IDs.
Continuous Excuses for More Money: When the first payments go through, the scammers create new hurdles — fake customs duties, unexpected legal fees, or “government charges” — demanding more money.
Job Opportunity Baiting (Optional): Sometimes they introduce a job opportunity linked to the gift delivery or foreign company, trapping victims into giving personal documents like Aadhaar or bank details and paying “processing fees”.
Disappearance and Blocking: Eventually, once the victim stops responding or refuses to pay more, the scam caller blocks them, and the entire operation vanishes.
Victims lose large sums often ranging from few thousand up to lakhs of rupees. The fraudsters frequently use multiple UPI IDs and untraceable prepaid SIM cards, complicating recovery.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- Sudden friend requests from “foreign nationals” with no mutual contacts.
- Promise of expensive “gift boxes” tied to romance proposals.
- Insistence on UPI payments for customs or delivery fees.
- Urgency and emotional pressure to pay immediately.
- Requests for Aadhaar numbers, bank details, or OTPs under job or delivery pretenses.
- Use of multiple UPI IDs across payment requests.
- Lack of verifiable tracking or courier details despite repeated claims.
What Happens to Victims
Victims usually face significant financial loss, with many unable to reverse UPI payments because once a UPI transaction is authorized, banks are reluctant to refund unless transaction fraud is proven and police complaints are filed promptly. Additionally, the emotional trauma from betrayal and trust violation can cause psychological distress.
In some cases, misuse of Aadhaar or personal documents shared during fake job offers leads to identity theft and SIM swap attacks, risking loss of mobile banking or financial accounts. This adds layers of complexity and longer-term damage beyond immediate cash loss.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
The Reserve Bank of India has repeatedly advised consumers to be cautious of unsolicited requests for UPI payments or bank details, especially from unknown contacts. RBI’s formal guidelines emphasize never sharing UPI PIN or OTP with anyone.
CERT-In highlights the rise in romance scams exploiting WhatsApp and social media platforms, warning users not to share personal documents or pay money upfront under any emotional pressure. The Ministry of Home Affairs' I4C cybercrime portal encourages early reporting of such frauds and provides the 1930 helpline for assistance.
Victims should also note that UPI transactions cannot be blocked or reversed without bank intervention and an FIR. The RBI’s grievance cell and CERT-In’s cybercrime reporting mechanisms are crucial for recovery and legal action.
