Check This Scam on BharatSecure →Gaming and Online Marketing Job Lure Scam in India 2026: Beware of Fake UPI Payment Tricks
A rising number of job seekers in India are falling prey to a dangerous scam where fraudsters lure them with fake gaming and digital marketing job offers, only to steal money through deceptive UPI transactions.
What Is the Gaming and Online Marketing Job Lure?
This scam targets mainly young job seekers and fresh graduates across India who are actively searching for work in the booming sectors of online gaming and digital marketing. Fraudsters pose as recruiters from well-known companies or “startups” promising high-paying remote jobs with flexible hours. These fake job offers often arrive via WhatsApp, email, or social media messages.
The lure is that the victim will be hired for tasks related to gaming apps, social media campaigns, or digital advertisements. However, before onboarding, they are asked to make “training fee” payments, “security deposits,” or to transfer money supposedly for software licenses or equipment. Victims are persuaded to send these payments using UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, often to UPI IDs that look legitimate but in fact belong to scammers.
According to public complaints reported to Indian cybercrime cells and advisories by CERT-In (the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team), this scam is increasingly common in metropolitan cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, but cases are rising in smaller towns too. The scam often involves impersonation of real recruiters and uses fake websites or job portals for legitimacy.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
Initial Contact: The victim receives a message, typically on WhatsApp or email, claiming to be from a gaming company or digital marketing firm offering a lucrative job with full-time or freelance flexibility.
Job Interview: The scammer conducts a casual “interview” via chat or call to build trust. They may share fake job descriptions, web links, or reference bogus employee testimonials.
Advance Payment Request: The victim is then told they must pay a fee for training, certification, or equipment. The scammers often ask for this money to be sent via UPI transfer, citing urgent deadlines or limited-time offers.
UPI Transfer Trap: Using phishing or social engineering techniques, the scammer convinces the victim to share their UPI PIN or OTP, or directs them to a fake payment interface. In some cases, victims unknowingly approve multiple payments or authorize apps that drain their bank accounts.
Disappearance: Once money is transferred, the alleged recruiter cuts off communication. The job offer turns out to be fake, and no refund or response is given.
Continued Contacts: Sometimes the scammer continues to promise job activation if the victim pays more money, leading to repeated fraud attempts.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- Upfront Payment Demand: Legitimate jobs do not ask for money before employment starts.
- Pressure Tactics: Urgency to pay quickly, threatening job loss otherwise.
- Use of Personal UPI IDs: Requests to send money to unverified or personal UPI accounts rather than official company channels.
- Requests for UPI PIN or OTP: Never share these with anyone.
- Unprofessional Communication: Grammar mistakes, unofficial email domains (like Gmail or Yahoo instead of company domains).
- No Verifiable Company Contacts: Lack of official website, phone numbers, or physical office address.
- Job Offer Without Formal Process: No background checks, no formal interviews beyond messaging apps.
What Happens to Victims
Victims often lose anywhere from a few thousand to several lakhs of rupees depending on how much they are persuaded to pay. Using UPI payments makes recovery difficult as these transactions are instant and irreversible, unlike NEFT/RTGS. If the scammer tricks the victim into sharing UPI PINs or OTPs, attackers may drain linked bank accounts directly.
Emotionally, victims feel cheated and helpless, as many invest savings or loans into these fake jobs hoping for a breakthrough. Some victims’ Aadhaar details or KYC information might be misused if shared during the process, potentially leading to identity fraud or SIM swap attacks, exposing them to further financial risks.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has repeatedly warned users to protect their UPI credentials and avoid sharing OTPs or PINs. RBI helpline 14567 can assist victims experiencing suspicious transactions. CERT-In advises extreme caution with job offers asking for advance payments and urges verification before transferring money or sharing personal details.
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ 1930 cybercrime helpline encourages prompt reporting of such incidents and stresses that no legitimate employer will ask for payments for jobs. Under the Information Technology Rules 2021, those found misusing UPI systems or personal data may face legal action.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify Job Offers Independently: Contact company HR offices through official websites or verified profiles before responding.
- Never Pay Upfront Fees: Genuine employers never demand advance money or deposits for jobs.
- Use Official UPI Channels: Double-check recipient UPI IDs for suspicious patterns or mismatches.
- Protect Your UPI PIN and OTP: Never share these details with anyone, including “recruiters.”
- Check for Company Legitimacy: Research the company online and look out for fraud reports on portals like BharatSecure.app.
- Be Wary of Pressure Tactics: Take your time and avoid responding to urgent payment requests.
- Report Suspicious Jobs: Use the 1930 helpline and cybercrime.gov.in to file complaints quickly.

- Immediately block the scammer’s phone number and stop all communication.
- Contact your bank and report unauthorized UPI transactions; request immediate blocking or freezing of your account if you suspect PIN/OTP compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is it safe to pay any fees for online job training or certifications?
No, reputable companies do not ask job candidates to pay money upfront. Any request for fees before job confirmation should be treated as a red flag.
Q2: Can I get my money back if I paid via UPI to a fake recruiter?
Unfortunately, UPI payments are instant and usually cannot be reversed. Contact your bank immediately to report fraud; they may help freeze your account to prevent further loss.
Q3: How can I verify if a job offer is genuine?
Check if the company has an official website, verify contact numbers directly from there, ask for written offers on company letterhead, and search online for reviews or scam reports about the recruiter.
Check any suspicious message or job offer on BharatSecure.app, and if you encounter suspected fraud, report it immediately on the 1930 cybercrime helpline.
