Beware the UK Care Worker Certificate of Sponsorship Scam in India 2026: Don’t Fall for Fake Overseas Job Offers

A rising number of Indian job seekers are reportedly targeted by fraudsters posing as UK recruitment agents offering care worker jobs tied to a fake Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

What Is the UK Care Worker Certificate of Sponsorship Scam?

In 2026, fraudsters are actively exploiting WhatsApp and Telegram groups where Indians seek overseas jobs, especially in the health and social care sectors like nursing or elderly care in the UK. These scammers impersonate recruitment agents or agencies, offering lucrative jobs that require a "Certificate of Sponsorship" (CoS) issued by a UK employer—a genuine immigration document essential for work visas.

According to public complaints reported to cybercrime authorities like the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and advisories from CERT-In, this scam is spreading across multiple states, with vulnerable young professionals drawn by promises of good salaries and easy UK visas. The scam is particularly affecting users who rely heavily on messaging apps such as WhatsApp for communication.

Fraudsters exploit the lack of official channels and genuine knowledge disparities around UK immigration processes. Unlike genuine recruitment, these fake agents often demand upfront fees—sometimes amounting to tens or hundreds of thousands of rupees—claiming the money is needed to process the CoS, visa fees, or other documentation.

How This Scam Works — Step by Step

  1. Initial Contact via WhatsApp or Telegram: Job seekers active in care worker or overseas employment groups receive friend requests or direct messages from profiles claiming to be UK recruitment agents or recruiters.

  2. Building Trust: The scammers engage in casual conversation, share fake documents or certificates, and refer to fake government or UK Home Office processes to appear credible.

  3. Pitching the Job Offer: After establishing rapport, they present a job offer for a UK care worker position, emphasising that the crucial step is to get a Certificate of Sponsorship which they "arrange."

  4. Request for Advance Payment: Victims are asked to pay fees through UPI IDs, bank transfers, or even prepaid cards. The charges are said to include CoS fees, visa application support, medical tests, or training.

  5. Pressure and Urgency: Scammers create a false sense of urgency, telling victims the CoS is limited or will expire soon, to rush them into payment without due diligence.

  6. False Promises and Disappearance: After payment, the contact goes silent, the promised CoS or job details never arrive, and victims realise they have been defrauded.

  7. Additional Risks: Some victims also share personal data like Aadhaar numbers, PAN cards, or bank details, exposing themselves to identity theft or SIM swap fraud.

Real Warning Signs to Watch For

What Happens to Victims

Victims often lose significant amounts of money through irreversible UPI transactions or direct bank transfers. Unlike some banking transactions, UPI payments cannot be reversed easily once completed, making recovery difficult. The misuse of personal documents like Aadhaar or PAN can lead to broader identity theft, including fraudulent loans or SIM swap frauds that enable scammers to intercept OTPs and steal further funds.

Beyond financial losses, victims face emotional distress, shattered hopes for overseas employment, and loss of trust in legitimate job channels. The impact is particularly severe for young Indians relying on remittances or better career prospects abroad.

What RBI and CERT-In Say

While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regularly warns about fraud prevention related to digital payments, CERT-In has issued advisories highlighting the importance of verifying job offers and not sharing sensitive personal information online. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) emphasises reporting suspicious job offers immediately and using the national cybercrime helpline 1930 for assistance.

The RBI advises users to regularly monitor bank statements and report any unauthorized transactions to their banks immediately. CERT-In recommends caution when responding to unsolicited messages or calls that ask for personal or financial details.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Verify recruiters through official UK government portals about sponsorship and job offers.
  2. Avoid paying any fee upfront, especially via UPI or direct bank transfers, before verifying genuine job confirmation.
  3. Never share Aadhaar, PAN, or bank account details unless through trusted, official recruitment agencies with proper documentation.
  4. Confirm agency credentials by checking registrations with the Ministry of External Affairs or Indian embassy advisories on overseas employment.
  5. Use official communication channels, such as registered email IDs and phone numbers, rather than just WhatsApp or Telegram messages.
  6. Report suspicious calls or messages immediately on the 1930 cybercrime helpline and the I4C portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
  7. Use BharatSecure.app to check suspicious job offers or messages to confirm legitimacy before proceeding.

What to Do If You’ve Been Targeted

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a genuine UK care worker job require upfront fees or payments?
A: Officially, certified UK employers or authorized agents do not ask for advance fees for a Certificate of Sponsorship. Any upfront payment request, especially via personal payment apps like UPI, should raise suspicion.

Q: How can I verify if a Certificate of Sponsorship is real?
A: Real CoS documents are issued by the UK Home Office and linked to an approved sponsor licence. You can verify sponsorship status on the UK government website or seek official immigration advice.

Q: What should I do if I have already paid money to these agents?
A: Immediately report the transaction to your bank to try to stop or recover funds. File a complaint with cybercrime.gov.in and notify the police. Also, secure your bank accounts and Aadhaar-linked services.

If you receive suspicious job offers or messages promising UK care work visas, verify their authenticity at BharatSecure.app and report fraud quickly by calling 1930.
