Scammers in India are targeting small businesses and freelancers with fake UPI payment apps, risking your money and trust in digital payments.
What Is the Fake UPI Payment App Trick?
The Fake UPI Payment App Trick is a critical cyber fraud targeting small business owners, kirana storekeepers, and freelancers across India in 2026. Fraudsters posing as eager customers contact sellers through WhatsApp, Facebook, and local marketplaces, expressing interest in buying goods or services. The scam exploits the seller’s hopes for quick sales, especially when offered seemingly genuine deals worth a few thousand rupees.
This scam is widespread in urban and semi-urban areas where UPI-based payments have become the norm. Since India’s UPI ecosystem processes over 10 billion transactions monthly, scammers see great opportunity in disrupting trust here. According to complaints reported to cybercrime units and advisories from CERT-In and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), fake payment applications that visually mimic legitimate UPI apps are being used to dupe victims into authorising transfers to fraudulent accounts.
Both RBI and CERT-In have issued warnings about such impersonation scams, stressing that users must never install payment apps from unofficial sources or enter UPI PINs on unknown platforms.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
Initial Contact: The scammer scans local online ads posted by small business owners and freelancers. They send a WhatsApp message claiming to be a prospective customer interested in purchasing goods worth around ₹5,000 or more. The message looks genuine, and the buyer may provide convincing details like location and payment methods.
Introducing the Fake UPI App: To complete the transaction, the scammer asks the vendor to download a “new UPI payments app” or an “updated version of a popular UPI app” linked to WhatsApp messages or shared links. This app is actually fraudulent, designed to look authentic.
Requesting Payment or Refund Authorization: The fraudster asks the victim to enter their UPI ID and then OTP/PIN details to “confirm the payment.” Sometimes, they ask the victim to initiate a refund or accept a payment that “failed” to supposedly prove the deal is genuine.
Harvesting Credentials: Once the victim enters sensitive information like UPI PIN and bank account linked details on this fake app, the scammer captures it instantly.
Unauthorized Money Transfer: Using the collected credentials, scammers transfer money out of the victim’s bank account via UPI to accounts they control.
Victim Realisation and Loss: The victim only discovers the fraud hours or days later when unexpected debits appear or their bank blocks transactions after suspicious activity.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- Requests to download payment apps from unofficial links or WhatsApp messages instead of Google Play Store or App Store.
- Urgent pressure to share UPI PIN or OTP to “verify” or “complete” a transaction.
- Buyers willing to pay more than the listed price or asking for refunds/refunds in suspicious ways.
- URLs or app names that are similar, but slightly misspelled versions of trusted UPI apps.
- Poor app design, excessive ads, or unusual permissions requested by the app.
- Buyers who refuse to call or use official payment gateways like BHIM or banks’ apps.
- Multiple payment messages or transaction prompts within minutes from the same buyer.
What Happens to Victims
Victims experience financial loss through unauthorised debits from their bank accounts via UPI. Since UPI transactions are instant and irreversible, recovering stolen funds can be very difficult. Some victims report losing upwards of ₹10,000 in single transactions, severely impacting small businesses’ daily operations.
Emotional trauma also sets in, often accompanied by feelings of guilt and helplessness. Kirana store owners or freelancers who rely on these payments for daily expenses face unexpected cash crunches. Moreover, the scam can lead to misuse of the victim’s bank details or Aadhaar-linked data, compounding privacy concerns.
SIM swap fraud sometimes compounds the issue if the victim’s mobile number is compromised, allowing scammers to intercept OTPs and override security.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has continuously reminded users to safeguard their UPI PIN and never share it with anyone, even if they claim to be from banks or government authorities. RBI’s guidelines also emphasise downloading apps only from official sources like Google Play Store.
CERT-In and I4C have issued advisories warning about fake UPI apps spreading via social media and messaging platforms. They urge users to be vigilant and report any suspicious app or payment request immediately.
If you encounter such a scam, call the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or approach your bank’s grievance cell. RBI also provides a toll-free helpline (1800-111-555) for UPI-related complaints.
