# FedEx Parcel Scam Call India — 2024 Safety Guide

FedEx parcel scam calls are fake calls from fraudsters posing as FedEx or customs officials demanding payment for an "undelivered parcel" containing illegal items to steal money or personal data from Indian victims.

## What Is This and Why Should Indians Be Concerned?

This scam targets Indian internet users who shop online or expect deliveries. According to CERT-In's 2023 advisories, courier scams rank among the top 5 cyber frauds reported to India's 1930 helpline, with over 12,000 complaints filed between January-December 2023.

Scammers exploit the trust in well-known brands like FedEx combined with fear tactics – claiming the victim's Aadhaar-linked parcel contains drugs, passports, or other illegal items. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) warns that these calls often originate from international numbers (+92, +1, etc.) or spoofed Indian numbers appearing legitimate.

## How It Works — Step by Step

1. **The Call**: Victim receives a call from a number like +91-80XXXXXX98 or +1-202XXXXXXX claiming to be from "FedEx Customer Care" or "Mumbai Customs". CID/NCB/CBI involvement is often falsely cited.

2. **The Threat**: Caller alleges a package addressed to the victim (often mentioning their name and partial address) was intercepted containing illegal goods like passports, drugs, or foreign currency. A fake seizure notice may be sent via WhatsApp from numbers like 91XXXXXX78.

3. **The Demand**: Victim is told to pay a "fine" (₹25,000-₹5 lakh) via UPI (us**@paytm) or share OTPs/bank details to "avoid legal action". Some are directed to fake "RBI clearance" portals.

4. **Theft**: Money is immediately transferred if UPI/OTP is shared. In advanced cases, screensharing via AnyDesk/TeamViewer is used to drain bank accounts.

## Real Warning Signs to Watch For

- **Threatening Language**: Calls that escalate quickly to legal threats ("Your Aadhaar is blacklisted") or arrest warnings.
- **Payment Demands**: Requests for UPI, gift cards (Amazon/Flipkart), or cryptocurrency payments to avoid "court cases".
- **Spoofed Numbers**: Calls showing "FedEx" on caller ID but number doesn't match official FedEx India contacts (1800-22-6161).
- **Urgency**: Pressure to act within minutes ("Pay now or police will come").
- **Data Leaks**: Callers knowing your name, city, or order history (likely from previous data breaches).

## What RBI, CERT-In, or I4C Say

- **CERT-In Advisory (2023)**: Warns against sharing OTPs/SIM details with callers claiming to be from courier companies (https://cert-in.org.in).
- **Cybercrime.gov.in**: Lists parcel scams under "Cheating by Personation" (IPC 419) with instructions to file FIRs.
- **RBI Guidelines**: No legitimate entity will demand UPI payments for "customs clearance" – report such requests to your bank immediately.

## How to Protect Yourself

1. **Verify Independently**: Hang up and call FedEx India's official number (1800-22-6161) or check tracking on their website directly (not via links sent in messages).
2. **Never Share OTPs/Bank Details**: Real courier companies never ask for OTPs, UPI PINs, or account numbers.
3. **Enable DND**: Register your number on TRAI's Do Not Disturb (DND) to reduce spam calls.
4. **Use Truecaller**: Screen calls marked "Spam" or from unknown international numbers.
5. **Freeze Transactions**: If you shared financial details, contact your bank to block UPI/bank accounts within 30 minutes.

## What to Do If You've Already Been Affected

1. **Immediate Action**:
   - Call 1930 or file a complaint at https://cybercrime.gov.in with call recordings/WhatsApp screenshots.
   - Inform your bank to freeze transactions (UPI can be blocked via BHIM app > Disable UPI ID).

2. **Documentation**:
   - Save the scam number (+91-98XXXXXX12), UPI IDs (ab**@ybl), and any fake "seizure notices".
   - Take screenshots of transactions with timestamp (Go to UPI app > Transaction History).

3. **Follow-up**:
   - Lodge an FIR at your local police station citing IPC 420 (Cheating), IT Act Section 66D.
   - Monitor CIBIL score for unauthorized loans taken using leaked Aadhaar/PAN.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: Can they really blacklist my Aadhaar card?**
No. Government agencies never demand payments over calls to "unblock" Aadhaar. Check status only at https://resident.uidai.gov.in.

**Q: I gave my UPI PIN. What now?**
Immediately disable UPI via your bank app and report to NPCI at phishing@npci.org.in with transaction details.

**Q: The caller knew my old address. How?**
Data leaks from past breaches (e.g., Flipkart/Amazon sellers) are often used. Change passwords on shopping sites.

**Q: Are SMS from "FedEx-IND" legit?**
Scammers fake sender IDs. Real FedEx SMS come from DM-FEDEX and never contain payment links.
