A dangerous new investment scam called the 'bull run ruse' is tricking Indians into losing lakhs by promising unrealistic stock market returns during so-called "bull run" periods. Here's how to spot and avoid it.
What Is the Investment Scam Through 'Bull Run Ruse'?
This fraud preys on investors' FOMO (fear of missing out) during periods when stock markets are rising. Scammers impersonate financial experts or brokerage representatives, claiming to have insider knowledge about an upcoming "bull run" (prolonged market growth). Victims report being promised returns of 300-500% within weeks if they invest immediately through the fraudsters' platform.
According to public complaints lodged with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), these scams typically originate through:
- Unsolicited WhatsApp messages from numbers like +91 98XXXXXX12
- Cold calls from "relationship managers" claiming to represent major brokerages
- Telegram/Signal groups promoting "exclusive trading opportunities"
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a warning in March 2026 about unauthorized entities offering "high-return investment schemes" with pressure tactics. While not specifically naming the bull run scam, the advisory noted a 217% annual increase in investment fraud complaints.
How This Scam Works — Step by Step
The Hook: You receive a WhatsApp message/call claiming: "The Nifty is entering a historic bull run! Our proprietary algorithm can multiply your investment 5X in 30 days. Limited seats available." Often includes fabricated screenshots of "profits" from other "investors" and celebrity endorsements.
Urgency Creation: The caller pressures you to act immediately before the "bull run window closes." They may claim links to SEBI-approved brokers or display fake Credibility Ratings (like "CRISIL AAA").
Registration: Victims are directed to download a fake trading app (often named to resemble legitimate brokers) or transfer funds to a merchant UPI ID like bi**@fakeupi.
Initial Gains: Small investments may show "profits" in the app to build trust — these are fabricated numbers with withdrawal fees/conditions.
The Trap: When larger sums (usually ₹50,000+) are invested, the app/website vanishes, calls stop, or victims are told to pay "exit fees/GST" to access their money.
Real Warning Signs to Watch For
- Unsolicited contact: Legitimate brokers don't cold-call about "secret opportunities"
- Too-good-to-be-true returns: No regulated investment promises 300%+ returns
- Pressure tactics: "Join today or miss out forever" is always a red flag
- Fake verification badges: Scammers forge SEBI/AMFI registration numbers
- Private payment channels: Real brokerages never ask for UPI transfers to personal handles
- App download links: Official apps are only on Play Store/App Store, never via WhatsApp
- Account mismatches: Funds go to merchant IDs not linked to any brokerage (e.g. qp**@paytm)
What Happens to Victims
Financially, losses average ₹2.3 lakh per case according to cybercrime police reports. Money sent via UPI is instantly diverted through mule accounts, making recovery nearly impossible — only 11% of victims in 2025 recovered any funds through the RBI's repayment framework.
Many victims also report subsequent Aadhaar-linked fraud, suggesting scammers use collected KYC documents to open fraudulent loans or SIM cards. In Mumbai alone, 37 complaints cited identity theft after initial investment losses.
What RBI and CERT-In Say
While no advisory specifically names "bull run" scams, current protections include:
- RBI guidelines: Only SEBI-registered entities can offer investment advice (verify registration on SEBI's SASTRA portal)
- CERT-In warning: High-risk alerts about fraudulent trading apps mimicking real brokers
- Cybercrime portal: Report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 immediately after fraud
The 1930 helpline can freeze mule accounts if reported within 2 hours of the transaction.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify independently: Check any firm's SEBI registration number at sastrasebi.sseindia.com
- Never download apps via links: Use only official app stores, and check developer details
- Scrutinize payment recipients: Brokerage transfers should go to corporate accounts, not personal UPI IDs
- Avoid "exclusive" groups: Real investment research isn't shared on Telegram/Signal
- Enable UPI limits: Set daily transaction ceilings (₹1 lakh or lower) in your bank app
- Watch for clones: Fake apps often misspell names (e.g. "Zeroddha" instead of Zerodha)
- Don't share OTPs/Screen Access: No legitimate service needs remote device control
What to Do If You've Been Targeted
- Act immediately: Call 1930 within 2 hours for highest recovery chance
- Document everything: Save call recordings, WhatsApp chats, UPI transaction IDs
- Freeze your accounts: Contact your bank to block suspicious merchant IDs
- Lock Aadhaar: Use UIDAI's virtual ID feature if you shared KYC docs
- File FIR at cybercrime.gov.in with all evidence
- Warn others: Report the number to WhatsApp (tap message > Report)
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Could this be legitimate if the returns are slightly lower (e.g. 50% returns)?
A: No. SEBI rules prohibit guaranteed return promises. Even 20% monthly returns are nearly impossible legally. Anything beyond FD/PPF rates requires extreme risk that regulated entities must disclose.
Q: What if the trading app shows my money growing — can I withdraw small amounts?
A: Scammers sometimes allow small withdrawals to build trust before asking for larger deposits. Any app preventing full withdrawals is almost certainly fraudulent.
Q: How are they getting my number to message/call me?
A: Data leaks from other breaches, public mutual fund holdings (earlier KYC docs), or shared WhatsApp groups expose numbers to cold-calling operations.
