How Edited UPI Transaction ID Scam Works

Overview: The Edited UPI Transaction ID Scam is a cunning fraud targeting sellers and professionals who accept UPI payments, particularly those transacting via WhatsApp or digital marketplaces. Scammers modify genuine past UPI payment screenshots by changing amounts, transaction IDs, and recipient names so they appear to match the current transaction. The primary goal is to convince victims that a payment has been made, ultimately cheating them out of goods or services. How It Works: A scammer communicates as a buyer, often on platforms like OLX or WhatsApp. Just before a scheduled delivery or handover, you receive a WhatsApp image of a UPI payment success screenshot. This screenshot may be photoshopped from an older real transaction, with the amount, date, and recipient edited to match your agreement. The scammer then pressures you to complete the transaction quickly. If you check only the screenshot and not your UPI app, you could be duped—the payment will not have actually arrived. India Angle: This method is heavily used on WhatsApp and OLX, and targets all-India merchants, freelancers, and individuals selling goods or renting out services. West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh report frequent cases. Both urban online sellers and rural individuals using digital payments are at risk. Scammers often target new sellers or those offering high-value items. Real Examples: An OLX seller is sent a message: “Here’s proof of payment for the phone. See attached screenshot with transaction ID xyz123456.” The transaction ID, when checked in the seller’s bank or UPI app, does not appear. Similarly, a pet service provider in Lucknow gets: “Payment of ₹1,500 done to your account @ybl. Please confirm and share address.” Red Flags: - Transaction ID in screenshot does not match any record your bank or UPI app - Timestamp differs slightly from your current time - Sender UPI ID or name has small misspellings or extra characters - Slightly blurry or cropped screenshots - Pressure to confirm dispatch or delivery immediately Protective Measures: Always confirm the payment within your UPI app by cross-checking the transaction ID, date, and time. Don’t rely solely on screenshots or SMS. Ask the buyer to share their UPI reference number from the app—not from an image. Never act in haste, and insist on seeing the actual credit in your account before delivery. Train your family, staff, or partners to follow this procedure. If Victimised: Collect all evidence—screenshot, WhatsApp chat, scammer’s phone number and UPI ID. Report the fraud to 1930 and on cybercrime.gov.in. Notify your bank with full details for possible remedial actions. File a police complaint for record and investigation.
