How This Scam Works — Detailed Explanation
The UPI QR Code Overlay Scam at Petrol Pumps is a new and dangerous fraud targeting everyday fuel buyers in India. Scammers come to petrol stations and paste fake QR codes right over the genuine UPI payment codes displayed for digital transactions. These counterfeit QR codes look very similar to the original ones but actually redirect your UPI payments to the scammer’s account instead of the petrol pump’s official account. Because UPI payments are instant and irreversible, victims lose money immediately without any easy way to get a refund.
Scammers often target busy or poorly monitored petrol pumps in smaller towns or during late hours when staff is less vigilant. They replace the original QR code sticker with their own using a freshly printed sticker, sometimes designed with slightly different fonts, colors, or missing official logos such as Indian Oil, BPCL, or HPCL. The fake QR codes are pasted to blend in as much as possible, tricking customers into scanning and paying without suspicion. Usually, the scammers approach casually or don’t interfere directly with the customer, so the victim does not suspect anything until checking payment records.
Once the victim scans the fake QR code using popular UPI apps like BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm, the payment goes directly into the scammer’s bank account. The petrol pump owner, however, will not receive any notification or money for the fuel sold. Victims often only realize the fraud when they complain to the pump owner or notice transactions on their bank or UPI app that they did not approve. Unfortunately, due to the nature of UPI payments and absence of direct proof, tracing and recovering lost money becomes very challenging.
This scam exploits India’s massive digital payment ecosystem where UPI has become the norm, especially for low-value and quick payments. Scammers rely on limited awareness about QR security and customer trust in official-looking codes. They may also use WhatsApp or phone calls to convince victims to scan fake codes posted at public places. This fraud highlights the importance of being alert and knowing how to spot signs of tampering when making digital payments at petrol stations or any other retail outlets in India.
