How UPI Transaction Reversal Fraud Works
- Step 1: Scammers call/message victim claiming to be from bank/NPCI, referencing a specific recent UPI transaction that needs reversal due to error or fraud
- Step 2: Create urgency by stating reversal window is closing (e.g., only 2 hours left) and victim must cooperate immediately to recover funds
- Step 3: Request screen sharing via TeamViewer/AnyDesk or ask victim to click fake NPCI/bank reversal link for 'verification process'
- Step 4: Trick victim into sharing OTP or approving fake 'collect request' disguised as reversal authorization, which actually debits money from victim's account
- Step 5: Victim enters UPI PIN thinking they're initiating reversal but actually authorizes payment to scammer, who then disappears with the funds
How This Scam Works — Detailed Explanation
UPI Transaction Reversal Fraud is a dangerous scam that has been increasingly reported across India. Scammers take advantage of the trust people have in the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system, which is widely used for instant money transfers through apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. The fraud typically starts with an unsolicited phone call or SMS, where the scammer pretends to be from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) or the victim’s bank. They claim that a recent UPI transaction was made by mistake or is fraudulent, and assure the victim that they can help reverse the payment quickly.
To create a sense of urgency, the scammer pressures the victim to act immediately by saying the reversal window is closing or the account may be blocked. They then ask for screen sharing permission via apps like WhatsApp or request sensitive information such as the OTP (One-Time Password) or UPI PIN. Some scammers also send links that look like official bank pages but are fake dispute or reversal websites designed to steal login details. Another trick is asking the victim to approve a "collect" request in the UPI app that appears as a payment to the scammer’s account instead of an actual money receipt.
Once the victim shares their OTP, UPI PIN, or approves these fake payment requests, the fraudster completes a money transfer from the victim's account to a different account controlled by the scammer. Because UPI transactions are instant and irrevocable, the victim loses their money almost immediately and cannot get it back through the bank. Sometimes scammers even use Aadhaar-linked payments to lend legitimacy to their claims, making victims more likely to trust them.
Victims often realize they have been scammed only after their bank balance drops or when they contact the bank to dispute unauthorized transactions. Unfortunately, due to the speed of UPI transfers, many find it very difficult to recover their lost funds. This fraud highlights the importance of being vigilant against unsolicited calls, never sharing personal UPI information, and verifying any suspicious messages or notifications directly with the bank through official channels.
Who Does UPI Transaction Reversal Fraud Target?
Urban Indians aged 25-45, particularly OLX sellers, small traders, landlords, gig workers, and frequent UPI users in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Tier-2 cities
