How WhatsApp Scam Works in India
WhatsApp-based fraud reported in India usually relies on social engineering rather than any flaw in the app itself. A frequently reported script is the "family emergency": a message from an unknown number claims to be a relative who has lost their phone and urgently needs money transferred. The urgency and emotional framing are designed to stop the victim from verifying through a second channel.
Other commonly reported variants include fake job or "part-time task" offers that begin with small payouts and later ask for a deposit, lottery or gift messages that impersonate well-known brands, and group-investment chats that show fabricated profit screenshots. Some messages also try to trigger account takeover by asking the victim to forward a six-digit code — which is actually the victim's own WhatsApp registration code.
Because reading a message is harmless, the real risk begins when the victim clicks a link, calls an unknown number back, installs a suggested app, or shares a code or personal detail.
